Headline: Jossy Wang thesis exhibition: ‘Hero’s Journey’
Dates: August 2 – 13, 2022 Location: Alexander Hall [Signature image] Jossy Wang, The Power Struggle, Oil on Canvas, 24” x 36”, 2021 In his thesis exhibition, Jossy Wang paints the archetype of the hero’s journey, in which the protagonist confronts internal and external struggles. Isolation, aloneness, desperation, failure, regret, and abandonment --- each of these are a state of being that no person actively seeks out. But while seen largely as negative and unwanted, these are common plot points in the development of our character and our striving for success. It might not seem like it, but these unfavorable conditions are necessary ingredients for life. The stories depicted in Wang’s paintings showcase just how brimming with imperfection we are. We make mistakes. We choose poorly. We fall down. We lash out. We are constantly at war within ourselves. But we get back up time and time again, and we evolve. Reception: August 4, 2022, 5 to 7pm Gallery hours: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The Two Popes is a unique movie because it is a religious movie about Pope Benedict XVI and Francis. This movie has some funny moments, which I don't expect. Most of the faith-based film is quite severe. This movie has some serious moments, especially the scenes in Argentina.
This movie has some beautiful imagery, and I like the scene when the two popes are taking in Sistine Chapel. Some shot in the Sistine Chapel, the movie director, zoomed in to one of the paintings that were there. Another shot in the movie I love is the chat in the garden for both the popes. The conversation was last about thirty minutes; it was also an essential part of the movie. This movie is mainly speaking in Spanish, Latin, and English. The majority of the time, the film is in Spanish and then Latin. This movie has some subtitles when they are speaking both Spanish and Latin. I love this movie. These 20 drawings are the last ones that I did. This time that I did a lot with human anatomy because it is more scientific and which can help me with realistic practices. I did seven drawings that are human poses. These poses are giving me ideas about how to create some narratives.
These photos are from Bonaventure Cemetery, which is an excellent place for magnificent sculptures. The cemetery has so many religious icons. Some of them were spent with large amounts of money to show their family wealth.
The sculptures are well sculpted with some extreme details. Each sculpture has its own unique story, and each tale shaped their own life and the life that other people are fellow. One of the cemeteries was a great American lyricist, songwriter, and singer. He was famous for the song in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. One of the cemeteries was a girl named Grace; She became famous after her story was told to the public, and she died at a very young age. People can tell her site based on her sculpture in front of her space. It is very educational for me to go to different cemeteries to learn different skills or creative ideas. behind it. Image 7 is an impressionist painting. The usages of the color are excellent. The painting composition is a phenomenon that has unique texture and brushwork. The painting is a colder tone because of the color choice. Image 8 is a different take of religious painting that focuses on Jesus. Unlike Renaissance Paintings, the proportion of the figure is not as focused; the artist focuses more on the composition and the colors. The colors of the clothes are very detailed. The overall shadow is very realistic. Image 9 is a type of photo that usually inspired me the most, because I love to see the muscular form of a male body, and it is perfect for me to study some muscle drawings. It also helps me with the future project that is considered to change some of the biblical characters into some superheroes form. Image 10 is a picture that I took when I was in SUNY Fredonia for my undergraduate degree for my Asperger series. I loved this image because it shows people about the feeling of isolation, loneliness, darkness, and frustration. The composition of the photo is outstanding, the building is in the top corner and surrounding with darkness, and the building has black and white colors. Image 11 is a landscape painting, it looks very realistic, and the painting probably is from the Realism period. The details of the sky, rocks, and waves are incredibly insane. The color tone is perfect fits for the composition. Image 12 is a painting that was from the romanticism era, and it has many romanticism techniques, such as colors, shapes, and compositions. The overall tones of the painting are both warm and cold. In some areas, red color, brown, and orange colors are considered a warmer tone. Other colors, such as blue, grey-blue, purple-blue, and grey, are regarded as a colder tone. Image 13 is a movie scene, which is from Avengers: Endgame. Captain America was facing Thanos' army alone. I enjoyed this image because it has stunning shots, and the colors of the photos are just perfect. Image 14 is a movie poster from the movie Schindler's Lists. This movie took place in Nazi Germany during World War II. This movie is in black and white the majority, but the red jacket girl is the only character within colors, which is significant. Image 15 is an illustration that probably for a poster, which looks like a photograph. I think the artist use watercolors as a medium. This illustration reminded me of the 70's style. Image 16 is a poster that probably from the U.S. army. It is very detailed in the figure, and I like the background colors. Image 17 is a poster for soviet army. The red color was their national color. Image 18 is a narrative painting, that look likes the poster of James Bond movies Image 19 is another poster that possibly from Jame Bond movies. Image 20 is a photo that I took from Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Image 21 is another photo that I took in Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Image 22 is an impressionist painting that I may try to use the style into human figures. Image 23 is a photo that I took when I was in undergraduate back in Fredonia, New York. I love this sunset photo. Image 24 is another landscape photo that I took in Fredonia, New York. Image 25 is painting of Raft of the Medusa, which is one of my favorite painting.
This time I did seven painting small works because these are some exciting parts of works. I only did one painting in the sculptural compositions; the other six paintings are all in the stained glass form. I just realized that I and obsessed with the stained glass work, because they are so much color involve, and it does not look busy at all. The part that I found interesting is the two black dividers in the middle. It divided the paintings into four parts and sometimes even two parts. The four parts section reminds me of a comic book format.
These drawings practices are mainly dived into anatomical parts of the human body, especially human bones. These human bones are part of the combination that makes a human. The details of these drawings are incredibly complicated. They looked very intricate. These are just the beginning of the anatomic drawings. I want to do more bone structures of the human body and then try to do some muscle for exercises — this time, I did one male pose because it is a good thing to try something new.
These ten drawings are other practices of the male body; I did many of them in graphite pencils. I am so obsessed with the male body because the body shapes are interested. Another one, I did more gesture drawings, or even call them post drawings. I did the majority in male body gestures, but I want to try to do a couple of female gesture drawings. I think great artists cannot limit them to do a specific topic, and it is always good to do more different issues. Sometimes it is a challenge to do something that is not in the comfort zone.
These second set of ten paintings are continuing color studies of my final painting projects. I chose these compositions because it tells compile stories in the Bible. I have five small paintings that were from the sculpture that I took in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The other four paintings are stained glasses. There are my favorite types of work of art in the Cathedral because they divided the painting into four parts or two parts. Each section has its own story.
These three photos are parts of my final paintings because other paintings will have similar color palettes. The reason that the colors are like that is that the objects display in Cathedral. The effect is because of the sunlight hits these object, create some light and dark side. The first and the last images are sculpture based objects, which means they have some sculptural colors, such as wooden colors.
The first image has red color schemes; the third image has blue color schemes. They are both sculptural pieces and have a similar color in the objects, but because of the surrounding colors that around the objects, it changed the color schemes. The light source in the first image is not a natural light, which has yellow types of light hit the objects and makes the objects seem warmer. The third image has a natural light source, which makes the objects seem colder, but it also has some warm color scheme, so it balances out. The second image is a stained glass window painting; it has different color palettes. The color palettes for the second image are vibrant because it has light blue color schemes, bright red color schemes, and white color schemes. Many of the stained glass has this type of color palettes because it can make the character more recognizable. When I applied these three sets of color palettes in my paintings, it will be used correctly, because other ones have a similar color scheme. |
